Our client wanted the coolest house in the neighborhood. He wanted a home that matched his lifestyle; his art collection, car collection and his wine collection. The home he purchased was a 1980s concrete monster which was beautiful but an antique.
Our client contacted us and said "Make it a SmartHouse". These meant an easy to use and robust system that integrated all of his sub systems. Security, CCTV, Climate, Pool and spa, Lighting, Art lighting, Landscape lighting, Networking and WIFI, Wine room monitoring, Whole house audio, critical listening audio, video distribution, satellite TV distribution, Shade and shutter control, and more.
After many hours of walking the home and determining how we could ever make this monster a Smart House, we got started. The first phase of this project was to demolish the exiting interior to see what we had to work with. The home was divided into three sections each with a different ceiling height from the next. Cabling across the house was not possible so we engineered a conduit system that ran in the 8 car garage below. We set up 4 sub areas and one main head end. Cabling was run in this series of conduits for all aspects of low voltage.
After we ran thousands of feet of cabling, the trim out started. The main head end house 2 large sanus racks to hold the amplifiers, controllers, audio and video sources. It was also a sub station for some Lutron panels. Speaker in each room, Touch screens strategically placed throughout the home.
Climate control of seven air handlers was accomplished by integrating Leviton OMNIstats and temp sensors.
Lighting and shade control are controlled by the 70 keypads in the home as well as the ELAN g! interface. We created custom pages for each area the keypad would control. This allowed for simple operation.
Project Scope
The scope of this project was the largest in our 18 years in business. The homes modern design dictated that our equipment must be hidden and only the user interface be seen. Our client wanted to have the coolest house and we provided a system design that accomplished that and more. We were allowed to use our imagination and years of experience to create a home unlike any in Sarasota.
The ELAN g! home control's system was our backbone for system integration. All aspects of the system were readily available on our clients Touch screen, smart phone or tablet. The ease of use was critical.
The art collection dictated the lighting design. All pieces of art were to be individually lighted and controlled. We used traditional LED art lights, Ceiling mounted art lights as well as in-ceiling lights to illuminate the art. We even used edge linear lighting in an ingenious manner to highlight a wall mounted sculpture.
There is a kinetic sculpture hanging from the 18ft ceiling that we can set into motion at the touch of a button. We designed a DMX controlled lighting system for this sculpture so that when it is in motion, the RGB lights will come on can change colors while shining on the sculpture.
The audio video requirements were that the sound must impress the owners rock star friends. Accomplished with four JBL synthesis n800 array speakers paired with two N1500 sub woofers powered by the JBL S5165 amplifier. And thats just in the great room.
Outdoor music is handled by four Speaker Craft 8" outdoor speakers teamed with the SpeakerCraft Boom tomb.
The automation is what sets this home apart from others. Utilizing the ELAN g! and Leviton OMNI PRO systems, all aspects of the home are automated based on time of day and occupancy
Customer Needs
We have transformed a 1980s iconic Sarasota home into a state of the art Smart House. The customer has complete control over every aspect of his home while there or across the globe. His art collection is illuminated perfectly every day that he is there. The audio distribution means he can listen to whatever he wants in any area of the home. He can watch any video source on any TV in the home with a touch of a button. The security system and CCTV system make this a very safe Smart House.
The quality of life for our client started rather high at the beginning of this project so our task was not simple. We did however manage to create a system that enhances his lifestyle. Upon our clients initial test drive of his home system while on the road, we received the approval of our client when he said, "I Love this system"
Because the home is in Florida we considered the stormy season in our design. At the touch of a button, the home goes into hurricane mode and drops all shutters to protect the home.
The ease of use for this homes was priority one. our client is a very busy person and has no patience for "systems" The ELAN g! Interface is intuitive and simple to use. Our clients started using the system immediately with very little training.
All documentation are electronic and a complete set of as-builts was created for the project.
This home certainly stands as the ultimate Home of the year. The fact that this was a retrofit males this project that much more impressive. We first designed a system and then had to engineer a way to make it happen. This truly is the ultimate home of the year
