The lighting for this home is Lutron Homeworks with the user interface through the ELAN g! platform.
The lighting design for this home was critical as it is primary role is to highlight the clients extensive, multi medium art collection. Controlling the light was as important so solar shades and privacy shades were added. Lutron Home works was selected to control the 100+ circuits of art light, room lights, wine room lighting, landscape lighting. The main art piece is a kinetic sculpture hanging from the Great Room ceiling 18 feet up. It is lighted by RGB, DMX controlled LED lights in the ceiling. This lighting has been programmed to change colors with the music as the sculpture moves.
As the sun fades in the horizon, the art lights slowly ramp to the ideal, pre-selected illumination level for each piece in the home. The homes ambient light is created by the many works of art in the home. Different lights were used in different areas of the home because of the three different ceiling heights ranging from nine feet to 18 feet. Light levels needed to remain consistent throughout the home.
Our client also enjoys entertaining so controlling lighting levels and scenes inside is important. Lutron Shades are installed throughout to help control the light coming in from outside. Since the home is on the water in Florida, entertaining outside is equally important. We created 4 zones of landscape lighting designed to highlight the grounds and outdoor sculpture. Control of these lights is done through the ELAN interface with Lutron.
LED ceiling cans from WAC where used in the 18 and 12 foot ceilings. The bedrooms were outfitted with the LED laser lights. LED RGB lights were used as well as Edge strip lighting for unique lighting applications.
Project Scope
This is a large home with huge glass walls that face west over the water. The amount of light that is available during the day and the light that is required at night are two important variables required for this lighting project. The west facing side of the house is all glass with 18 walls in the great room. Solor shades and privacy shades were installed in all the rooms on that side of the house.
The homes three different ceiling heights required us to use the appropriate lighting in each section of the home to provide even lighting throughout. We also needed to design the flexibility in the lighting system to account for the different scenes required. From full on lighting to late night entertaining and everything in between.
Many of the paintings on the walls are in areas where the 18 foot ceiling does not allow for ceiling lighting. We installed traditional looking LED art lights above each painting. Each art light is switched individually for complete control. Sculptures were addressed by installing LED ceiling mounted spot lights with proper beam spread to only illuminate the sculpture and not the surrounding area.
A kinetic sculpture created by Hoberman is suspended from the 18 foot ceiling in the middle of the great room. This sculpture, at a touch of a button on the Lutron keypad, begins is motion. Opening from 18 inches to almost six feet, we were challenged to design a focal lighting solution for this sculpture.
We installed edge lighting in an area of the home that did not lend itself to any traditional lighting for the art and the hall way.
We integrated the outdoor lighting control into the lighting control so that we can create scenes that include the outdoor and indoor living areas.
Customer Needs
We were given the freedom to use our imagination on this project. We sat down and looked at all the art that was coming to this property. We helped place the art and then determined the best way to illuminate each piece. We designed the lighting for the entertaining. We designed the lighting for everyday life and for when the home is not occupied. We used a variety of LED lighting solutions throughout the home.
A primary concern was how to illuminate the Hoberman orb sculpture. We installed six RGB, DMX controlled, LED lights on the ceiling in a circle around the orb. We worked with the artist to create a lighting scene for the various movements. The RGB lights not only changed the lighting for the orb but changed the color and the mood of the homes interior. A single button on the Lutron keypad or ELAN interface sets the sculpture in motion and initiates the lighting scenes. The same can be done to stop the movement.
We placed Lutron keypads and ELAN touch screens strategically throughout the home for ensure ease of use and common sense scenes for each area of the home. All other equipment was hidden behind secret panels throughout the home. Art lights are also grouped so that all art in a specific area of occupancy can be turned on
The wine room is integrated into the lighting system. The wine room is illuminate by RGB LED lighting. We have integrated the access to each of the four doors by a different button sequence on the nearby Lutron keypad. When a door is opened, a white light above turns on so you can read the label.
Full set of as-built prints are created for this project.
