Tequesta is a tasteful blend of old-world style with new-world tech that offers a gaming experience completely unique in it’s category. This bowling alley pushes the boundaries of traditional gaming to the next level. With 51,510 LED DMX controlled Madrix channels, and a suite of 54 Chauvet concert lights within a 3,000sf wing of a private waterfront Palm Beach home, this is unlike anything we’ve seen or created before. Three 6,000lm Sony laser projectors accompany three Sony cameras allow us to map each bowling lane and deliver visual content linked to gaming outcomes. Simply rolling the ball can affect the images projected on the lane and depending on the scene, it can affect the entire room. STRIKE! You got it. Just throwing lights in a room isn’t solving the problem. Our client entertains distinguished guests and diplomats throughout the year. They want the ability to showcase their own content and branded events on the walls, lanes, and LEDs. They want multiple scenes that are fun and tasteful, along with the ability create their own.
She collects art, he plays games, and together they love creating environments that bring value to their friends and family. The bowling alley is a synthesis of these passions. They want Tequesta to be an innovative play space and creative opportunity for guests to have fun at all levels.
How do you retrofit a bowling lane from the past to be a bowling lane of the future? There were certainly some challenges ahead of us. Tequesta became a wonderful opportunity for BPS to stretch it’s creative engineering wings.
The owners of this 16,850sf home in Tequesta, Florida approached BPS with a very unusual request: Transform their home and private bowling alley into a fully automated, completely unique living and play space to entertain family, friends, and guests throughout the year. In addition to wanting all systems in their home to be completely controllable from keypads, touch panel displays, and mobile devices, they also wanted to upgrade an existing Brunswick-built bowling alley. The objective for the bowling alley upgrade was to create an experience that is fun, tasteful, and explores the boundaries of creative tech. To keep within the client’s budget, BPS began by designing schematics that made full use of nooks and corners to conceal hardware and maximize spend.
We began with the essentials by designing and installing a robust infrastructure of lighting, shading, A/V, HVAC, and security systems throughout the home. We then focused on the gaming wing. An armada of controlled concert lights were installed in the floor, walls, and ceiling to wash and transform the 3,000sf space. In order to projection map the bowling lanes, custom scaffolding was created to securely mount 3 Sony 6,000lm laser projectors in the ceiling. With accompanying cameras, the use of TouchMagix interactive display software, and Brunswick’s proprietary scoring software, we’re able to trigger graphics for downed pins, bowler performance, and gaming outcomes. This gives BPS the ability to take responsive projection mapping using original content and create completely unique bowling environments for our client. For original graphic design elements, BPS used Cinema4D, HoudiniFX, After Effects, and FCPX to edit and deliver additional dynamic imagery. The entire package offers our client the ability to host and brand fundraisers and parties, as well as spend a relaxing afternoon with subtle scenes and good music.
The results of this project exceeded client expectations. The true integrative use of lights, cameras, projectors, interactive software, and creative imagery offers the room a completely unique and innovative gaming experience. It was important to BPS and our client to keep the simplicity of the room in tact and do everything possible conceal hardware. To make this happen, we custom built mounts and pockets that kept hardware out of player sightlines. This extra step helps accentuate light and projection content, and allows players a more engaged gaming experience.
As a bonus, we gave our client access to our workflow and the ability to showcase original content. Thrilled by the ability to do this, they are hosting a fundraiser in the new year to help support a local charity. The entire bowling alley will be branded around a specific charity initiative and it will mark a fun first in fundraising. The transformation of traditional bowling alley to a completely new gaming experience, in the words of our client, is a complete success. There are currently 27 scenes and thousands of possible combinations that offer the ability to explore their own creative boundaries. Like a combination? Lock in a scene, give it a name, and it’s theirs forever.
BPS provided an ensemble of creative and engineered solutions to address the needs of our client and we’re incredibly grateful to play a role in their enjoyment and success. The goal was to create an innovative and customizable play space. We offered our client something original, tech savvy, useful, and genuinely fun for everyone. What began as an experiment has resulted in an experience that offers genuine enjoyment and pleasure to our clients and their guests. We are thankful that this objective has been met. It’s a privilege for us to be creative with technology in ways that push the envelope of both endeavors.
